Uxbridge Stars PeeWee AA 2008/09

DG Smith Major PeeWee's Battle Hard against Peterborough In First Round Playoff (Jan30/09)

First place Peterborough marched confidently into town to play last place Uxbridge Stars only to be shocked by a group of hardened battle ready Major Peewee boys!  In what "should have been" an easy ride to the next round for Peterborough, Uxbridge started the playoffs extremely motivated.  Game 1 saw Peterbough squeak out a 2-1 win with the only goal for Uxbridge scored by Adam English.

Game 2 of the series put Uxbridge down 2-0 near the end of the 2nd period with Matt Winnotoy putting Uxbridge on the score board with 3:21 remaining in the second.  With a hard fought third period Uxbridge managed to net 3 more goals by Derek Dolan, Luke Melong and Connor Evans defeating a shocked Peterborough 4-2.

Game Three had the parents taking heart medication as the boys took a 2-0 lead in the second with goals going to Luke Melong and Derek Dolan only to be answered back late in the second with three goals by Peterborough.  After a pep talk during the third period flood Uxbridge came out strong and added a third goal by Justin Cox with 2:47 left in the game.  With the game tied and overtime looming Todd Winder netted a sure winner with 19 seconds left in the game.  However with .08 seconds left in the game Peterborough tied the game forcing overtime.  This sudden death 10 minute overtime was a thriller with end to end action and the fans sitting on the edge of  their seats with every shot.  Both goalies stood on their heads and the game ended in a 4-4 tie with both teams taking a point.

Game 4 saw the parents stocking up once again on their heart medication as the boys took an early 2-0 lead in the first but letting Peterborough tie up the game in the second.  Uxbridge dominated the third netting 2 more goals and looking confident to take the win.  However, as fate would have it, Peterborough scored 2 goals with less than 45 seconds left in the game forcing a second overtime in as many nights.  This was a heart breaker but remained a 4 all tie.  Goals were scored by Luke Melong (2) Todd Winder and Connor Evans.

Game 5 was a tough game for both teams as this was the 4th night in row for the series.  Although the Uxbridge stars put forth a valiant effort Peterborough won the game 3-1 taking the series with 6 points.  The only goal for Uxbridge was scored by Todd Winder.

The goaltending duo of Ryan Housser and Mackenzie Phelps throughout the series was dynamic and without them we would have not been such a formidable force for Peterborough.

This was an incredible series with so much action and emotion felt by both teams and both sets of parents.  We are very proud of the boys for a fantastic representation of Uxbridge.  They each should be proud of themselves for almost taking the first place Peterborough team and for giving them the ride of their season!

Uxbridge will start the consolation round against Whitby this coming Sunday.

DG SMITH MAJOR PEEWEE STARS WIN HOME OPENER! (Sep 20/08)

The Major Peewee AA Stars, sponsored by DG Smith Insurance and coached by Brad Moore, Ryan Archibald and Kyle Archibald, treated the parents and fans to a 3-2 win over the Clarington Toros.  Connor Evans netted two goals; the first one early in the second and then again in the third with what proved to be the winning goal. David Shepherd netted the third goal in a gritty battle physical battle round out the scoring.

Offensively, all team members pulled out a spirited performance to beat last years’ second place team. The offensive group includes:  Derek Dolan, Todd Winder, Adam English, Matt Winnitoy, Callen Hageman, Nick Sangalli, Justin Cox, Connor Evans and David Shepherd.

The defensive corps of Jason Simmonds, Cam Warriner, Luke Melong, Owen Barry, Braeden Whitehead and Jeffery Wilson has been busy behind the blue line with their strong physical presence and grit.  The goaltending duo of Ryan Housser and Mackenzie Phelps has been solid in net.

DG SMITH Major Peewee Stars shine in Richmond Hill Early Bird Tournament! (Sep 7/08)

The DG Smith Insurance Major Peewee Stars went undefeated in round robin play at the Richmond Hill Early Bird tournament held in early September. Game one saw Uxbridge defeat the Markham Islanders 4-1 with goals by Connor Evans, Adam English, Matthew Winnitoy and Nick Sangalli.  The defensive team of Owen Barry, Braeden Whiteheand, Jason Simmonds, Cameron Warriner, Jeffery Wilson and Luke Melong worked hard to protect the defensive zone and secure the win.  Game two was a squeaker with Uxbridge narrowly beating the Caledon Hawks 2-1 with goals by Connor Evans and Derek Dolan.  Game three ended in a tie against the Markham Waxers; and this proved enough to secure Uxbridge a spot in the semi finals versus the Scarborough Bruins.  Derek Dolan netted the only goal.  All members of the offensive line-up  contributed to the scoring and are demonstrating great progress in puck movement and team work.

The semi final game proved to be a nail biter.  With only 2 minutes remaining and Uxbridge down 3-1; things were not looking positive. With the face off in Scarborough’s end head coach Brad Moore took the opportunity to call a time out and regroup.  Uxbridge pulled out all the stops… and the goalie…  Derek Dolan won the draw to Todd Winder who one timed the puck with only 1:55 left on the clock.  With the net still empty and Uxbridge putting solid forward pressure, Adam English scored a brilliant goal with only 22 seconds remaining to tie the game at three and force overtime.  The overtime proved exciting and hard fought; however, with one man in the box the Stars were unable to hold of the Bruins powerplay and lost a heartbreaker.  The goaltending duo of Mackenzie Phelps and Ryan Housser provided outstanding performances and kept the team in every game.  It was a great start to the season; congratulations Stars!
